Multicultural Family Literacy Program

The Multicultural Family Literacy Program engages University undergraduate and graduate students with K-12 students and their parents at schools and community sites in the Twin Cities area.Core program components are instruction for parents, instruction for children, training for parents on how to be their childrens primary teacher and to be full partners in the education of their children, and interactive literacy activities between parents and children.

University undergraduate and graduate students receive an hourly wage for their service through Federal College Work-Study funds for Community Service. $10 & $10.75. Family Literacy training includes literacy skills development, cooperative learning training, parenting skill development, relationship building skills and leadership development.

Several students in the program also may participate in the administrative aspects of the program in addition to the work at the sites. This program initiative seeks funding from area corporations and foundations for ongoing programming activities.
